Textile Art for craft fair

I have created some unframed textile art and felt art for selling at the craft fair I am doing this weekend.

The felt art is similar to work I have done in the past.  I first created a felt base using my embellisher and then added hand stitches in toning colours.   Buttons were added to finish.

I also tried out some new ideas for the textile art, with a mixture of patchwork, mixed media and fabric collage, all finished with hand stitching and some with buttons.

Both the felt art and the textile art are stitched to cream board and are sized to fit an 8" x 10" frame.  If any remain unsold after the craft fair, I will be putting them in my Folksy shop.

First "rust" creation complete!

A productive few days away have resulted in the first of my "rust" series.

This piece was inspired by the colours and texture of the sea wall at Pagham shown in the last post. The construction was based on some work of Jane LaFazio's shown in the last issue of Quilting Arts. I laid down some layers of wool fleece, sari silk and silk wste which I roughly needlefelted into a felt background. Then some scrim and organza was placed on top and needlefelted again before finally I needlefelted some lines of wool yarn to reflect the lines of the layers on the rusted piece and act as a guide for the hand stitching.

I then spent several glorious days hand stitching to add the texture I wanted.

Rust!

My obsession with rust continues! I seem to see rust everywhere I go, so much so that I really must get down to creating some art work with rust as the starting point.

At Pagham Harbour there is part of what must have been an attempt to secure the harbour wall and it has rusted beautifully, so much so that holes are appearing. Every time I see it the texture of the surface cries out for something to be done so I have started a sketchbook to collect together my ideas.

To give you an idea, here are some of the photos I've taken:

More for Folksy

I've just added these two creations to my Folksy shop.

They are both needlefelted - the left hand one is made using wool and silk fibres and the right hand one is recylced sari silk. Both have hand stitching and buttons to finish and are mounted on painted canvases.

Creative Sketchbooks

Last month I finished a City and Guilds Creative Sketchbooks course with Janet Twinn at Leatherhead. And what a great time I had!

I decided to do it as I would love to design my own art quilts but thought I lacked the artistic skills to do so. The course included many materials, media and techniques which were new to me and hopefully have given me the knowledge on which to build into my own designs.

Here are some photos of one of the Sketchbooks which had to be Freestanding with some 3D construction. The photos show the sketchbook closed up - a greenhouse full of cacti and succulents which were the sources for my designs. Another photo shows it opened out and then there are some of my favourite artwork. I also used up odd pieces of painted paper by making little seed packets based on the real thing.
